Documentary & Educational Activities for Schools

JUDES uses several tools to work within the school system to teach children and youth of all ages about the injustices of the conventional trading system as well as the social and economic benefits of fair trade on a personal, local community, and global level. JUDES has produced a documentary explaining the fair trade and conventional coffee trading processes. In an upper level classroom, JUDES staff or volunteers will show this film followed by a guided discussion debriefing the learnings in the video. There are several activities that can be done following the video, including an interactive role play game, a consumer savvy marketing activity exploring ethical purchasing and mock fair trade advertising campaign creation. A full list of activities, games and multimedia activities is available through the Nova Scotia Department of Education or by contacting the JUDES Development Coordinator at info@judesfairtrade.ca.

Cocoa Trading Game

JUDES has adapted an interactive role play game from Pa Pa Paa’s “The Trading Game” in which participants are able to take on the role of cocoa farmer, intermediary traders (coyotes), Fair Trade buyers, chocolate factories, and large grocery stores.  The game is a very powerful representation of how the conventional trading system is detrimental to the majority of farmers and how the Fair Trade system positively contributes to the development of communities. The game is often played after watching the documentary and followed by other debriefing activities. JUDES receives many requests for school presentations, and we strive to meet these requests through our volunteer Community Educators.

Please see the resources section of the website for a copy of this game.

Seminars

Businesses, unions and community groups are able to request JUDES facilitate a seminar about Fair Trade. The seminars vary in length and can be tailored to suit the needs of the organization requesting the presentation. Seminars can include basic information about the economic concept of fair trade, realities of Fair Trade in Canada and the world, how to become a Fair Trade advocate, how to make your organization/community more fair trade friendly. The Cocoa Trading Game and Coffee Comes Alive DVD are available for use in the seminars. JUDES requests an honorarium for these presentations to support our ongoing work.

Fair Trade Museum

The Fair Trade Museum is located in the Grand Pré Just Us! Café. The museum features a plethora of colorful and interactive displays explaining the diverse issues associated with Fair Trade. The museum focuses on advocacy and action, organics, environmentalism, the tenets of Fair Trade, the history and struggles of Fair Trade, the co-operative movement and its importance to Fair Trade as well as processes associates with coffee and cocoa production. Also in the museum a video of Coffee Comes Alive is shown in a mock Mexican casita as well as the NFB Moses Coady documentary is shown. Tours of the museum, as well as film showings in the multimedia room are available.

Campaigns

In partnership with the Town of Wolfville, Canada’s first Fair Trade Town, JUDES co-organized the first ever Weekend in Wolfville contes1 in May 2009.  We were overwhelmed by the interest.  Entrants wrote some amazing responses around why fair trade is important and also submitted photos of themselves using their favourite fair trade products. Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry.

Congratulations  to our lucky contest winner, Daphne Thorburn of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.  Daphne enjoyed a fantastic weekend enjoying the sights and sounds of fair trade and spring!
